Private Fidel Castro Funeral

Nine days of public mourning came to an end last Sunday in Santiago de Cuba at Fidel Castro’s funeral. His ashes were interred in a large, nondescript granite block. Crowds were kept back for a semi-private ceremony with family members and select officials. Fidel’s brother, Raul, placed the ashes into the granite block and a plaque that simply read “Fidel” was placed over the opening. Read the whole story here.

His monument seems small compared to the nearby mausoleum of Jose Marti, Cuban Independence hero. Also nearby is the monument to the rebels who died in Castro’s Moncado Barracks attack; the beginning of the revolution.

Castro died on November 25, 2016 at the age of 90. The small ceremony was in contrast to the massive crowds that bid farewell to him over the last nine days.
